Topic: Building Machine Learning Systems that Scale, by Brandon Smith

Python is the most dominant language in the machine learning community for good reason, yet there are significant challenges to scaling its use across an organization. Going from working in a Jupyter notebook to training, coordinating, managing, and serving thousands of models across a complex service requires significant planning and infrastructure. Companies like Google, Uber, and Facebook have spent years working on their own proprietary platforms and systems in order to solve all of the issues that come with scale. In this talk, I'll tackle the challenges unique to scaling a machine learning organization and how those challenges are currently being solved by both large companies and small startups.

It's our sixth anniversary blowout extravaganza!

This month our speaker will be Douglas Starnes. He will present 'TensorFlow for Folks without (or with!) a Ph.D.'. This will be a gentle introduction to Google's TensorFlow library for machine learning and deep learning. We will discuss machine learning basics, the types of problems that can be addressed and how TensorFlow and the related tools can be applied to implement solutions. We'll also look at TensorBoard, a unique interactive workflow visualization tool. Math will be kept to a minimum so don't stay home if you are not a number cruncher!

On October 14, the Computer Science department at the University of Memphis will be hosting a Data Analysis and Data Science in Python Workshop. From their announcement:

This 3-day hands-on workshop is designed for scientists and working professionals who would like to learn programming for basic and intermediate large-scale data analysis. Participants will learn how to program in Python and how to write short programs to analyze data.

This workshop promises to start with basical procedural programming in python, then build knowledge of object-oriented programming and data analysis using Pandas and Sckikit-learn.

Registration is now open and is $650 for professionals, $280 for students, and only $100 for current UofM students. Register here.

On Thursday, June 16, the Memphis Technology Foundation & Fedex Institute of technology are hosting an evening of lighthing talks. This will be a great showcase of various tech topics from local professionals.

MEMpy road trip

If you can only make one #memtech event this month, it should be the Tech Talks. And since we think it'll be a spectacular evening, we're putting the regular MEMpy meeting on hold this month.

However, if you need to get your Python fix, a few of us are planning a road trip to visit PyNash on Thursday, June 23 at 6:00pm for an introduction to Django Channels.

PyOhio 2016

The always-great PyOhio 2016 has recently been announced, and will be held on July 30-31, 2016. PyOhio is:

A free annual conference for Python programmers in and around Ohio, the entire Midwest, maybe even the whole world.

The Call for Proposals <http://pyohio.org/call-for-proposals/> is currently up and open until May 15, so get your talk proposal in soon! PyOhio is great, for frist-time speakers, so if you've never spoken at a conference before, this is the place to start. Even if you've spoken at dozens of conferences, this is one you don't want to miss.

SQLAlchemy is a popular database framework that provides an ORM and a schema centric query language, and in this talk we will take a look how to get started with the ORM. We'll learn how to establish connections to popular databases such as PostgreSQL and MySQL. Then we will look at how to define our models as user classes including relationships and persist them to the database. Next, we'll cover the how the SQLAlchemy session works with typical create, update, read, and delete operations. We'll wrap up with pointers of where to go next to learn more.

James Sheppard on Rosalind and Biopython. Rosalind is an "online judge" that manages challenges starting from Python For-Loops up through complex bioinformatics problems. Biopython is the main Python bioinformatics library; and it becomes ever more useful as the Rosalind challenges get harder. This would be great for both people who are learning core concepts for the first time and those who simply enjoy code puzzles.

The TECHcamp Memphis Call for Presenters is now open and accepting submission through October 15!

TECHcamp is the annual Memphis technology, social media, and online marketing conference for designers, entrepreneurs, content creators and software developers. It's a great opportunity to learn new skills and to connect with tech-industry veterans in the area.

Tennessee will soon have its own regional Python Conference, and it's happening in Nashville on February 22, 2014!

There will be keynotes, talks, lightning talks, tutorials, open spaces, young coder sessions and more! As with all regional python conferences, this will be an event to remember.

The Call for Proposals starts soon (October 1st, 2013), so start planning your talk, now. PyTennessee aims to have a wide variety of talks including financial, scientific, systems management, and general development topics.

I'm happy to announce our guest speaker, Matt Makai. Join us as he talks about Development Workflows with Github.

Github Development Team Workflows: What are the strengths and weaknesses of using Github for varying development team configurations? This talk will cover topics such as creating a canonical repository to have development team members fork from, handling code reviews through pull requests, and creating separate branches for testing and production deployments. This programming language-agnostic talk draws upon work with both co-located and geographically dispersed teams at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the George Washington University, and Motley Fool, some of which was recently covered in an article by Wired (http://www.wired.com/wiredenterprise/2013/01/hack-the-government/)

About the Speaker: Matt Makai is a traveling software developer visiting thirty cities in five months from March through August 2013. He remotely develops software with Python for two clients: the Motley Fool and George Washington University. He has previously developed software for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Marriott International, the FBI, Department of Defense, and Freddie Mac. In addition to his undergrad Computer Science B.S. from James Madison University, Matt has an M.S. in Computer Science and Applications from Virginia Tech and an M.S. in Management of Information Technology from the University of Virginia. Matt writes two blogs, one on software development and entrepreneurship at http://www.mattmakai.com/ and another on his current Coding Across America trip around the United States to visit with technology companies at http://www.codingacrossamerica.com/.
